Can dogs eat watermelon?

Yes, if you prepare it correctly. Watermelon is a low-calorie fruit with a high water content, but remove all seeds and the rind first, because both can cause digestive upset or an intestinal blockage.

Updated:

Why

Seeds can cause an intestinal blockage, especially if a dog eats many, and can be a choking hazard for small dogs. The rind may cause stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhoea or intestinal obstruction if eaten in large pieces. Too much watermelon may cause stomach discomfort or diarrhoea because of its natural sugar and fibre.

What to do

The first time, give a small amount and watch for digestive upset. Contact your vet if your dog shows symptoms after eating watermelon.

How to give it

Bite-sized pieces with all seeds and the rind removed; seedless pieces can also be frozen as a cooling treat.
