Can dogs eat apples?

Yes, in moderation. Apples are a safe, nutritious treat for dogs, but remove the seeds, core and stem first, because the seeds contain cyanide and the core and stem could choke your dog.

Updated:

Why

Apples are a low-calorie treat with vitamins A and C, potassium, antioxidants and fibre, especially in the peel. Because of the sugar in each apple, a whole apple is likely too much for your dog, and eating too many apples can cause bellyache or diarrhoea.

What to do

If your dog eats an apple core or seeds, watch for signs of digestive trouble or blockage. If your dog has problems, stop giving apples and contact a vet.

How to give it

Wash and scrub the apple, remove the seeds, core and stem, and cut it into slices or small cubes; in moderation, not a whole apple.

Questions and answers

Plain applesauce is fine in moderation, but most applesauce has added sugar, so always choose unsweetened.

Can dogs eat apple pie?

No. The added sugar and crust are too much for dogs; avoid apple foods with added sugar or spices such as nutmeg.
