OK in small amounts

Can dogs eat pineapple?

Yes, raw pineapple in small amounts is a good snack for dogs, as long as the spiny skin, the crown and the hard core are removed. Avoid canned pineapple, because the syrup has too much sugar.

Updated:

Why

Pineapple is full of vitamins, minerals and fibre, but it also contains a lot of natural sugar. The tough central core and the spiny skin can cause a blockage. Canned pineapple is best avoided, because its syrup contains too much sugar for most dogs' digestion. Some dogs get diarrhoea or an upset stomach from pineapple.

What to do

If your dog gets diarrhoea or an upset stomach after eating pineapple, pineapple may not be the right snack for it.

How to give it

Fresh and peeled, without the crown and core, cut into bite-sized pieces; frozen pieces of fresh pineapple make a summer treat.
