Can dogs eat strawberries?
Yes, in moderation. Strawberries are full of antioxidants, fibre and vitamin C, but they contain natural sugar, and too many at once can cause loose stools or diarrhoea. Wash them, remove the stems and leaves, and cut them small.
Updated:
Why
The stems and leaves are not toxic but can cause stomach upset, and whole strawberries can be a choking risk, especially for smaller breeds. Avoid strawberries in syrup or canned strawberries, which have too much sugar and may even contain artificial sweeteners that are toxic to dogs.
What to do
If you notice anything different after your dog eats strawberries, stop giving them and check with your vet.
How to give it
Washed thoroughly, stems and leaves removed, cut into small pieces, or mashed for small dogs; fresh or frozen, never in syrup or canned.
Questions and answers
Can dogs eat frozen strawberries?
Yes. Frozen strawberries cut into suitably sized pieces can be a safe, refreshing treat.
Should I ask my vet first?
Whenever you introduce a new food to your dog's diet, it is best to talk to your vet first.
