Can dogs eat honeydew melon?

Yes, sparingly. Honeydew is not toxic to dogs, but it is high in sugar, so give only a little as an occasional treat, and ask your vet first if your dog has diabetes. Remove the rind and seeds.

Updated:

Why

The ASPCA lists honeydew melon as non-toxic to dogs, and AKC's chief veterinarian suggests it among melons for frozen treats. The fruit is high in sugar, which may make it unsuitable for dogs with diabetes. The rind can cause digestive upset or an intestinal blockage, and the seeds are not toxic but can be a choking hazard.

What to do

Talk to your vet before adding honeydew to your dog's diet, especially if your dog has diabetes.

How to give it

Only the flesh, without the rind and seeds, cut into small cubes; it can also be pureed and frozen as a treat.

Questions and answers

Is honeydew okay for a dog with diabetes?

It might not be, because honeydew is very high in sugar. Ask your vet first.

What if my dog swallowed a seed?

Honeydew seeds are not toxic, and one seed is probably no cause for worry, but seeds can be a choking hazard, so remove them before serving.
