Can dogs eat cooked eggs?

Yes. Fully cooked eggs are safe and nutritious for dogs in moderation, as long as they are plain: no oil, butter, salt or seasonings. Hard-boiled or scrambled eggs work well. Too many can lead to weight gain.

Why

Cooked eggs provide protein, vitamins and healthy fats, but they are not essential to a balanced diet. Vets advise always cooking eggs before giving them to a dog. Egg shells have sharp edges that can hurt a dog's throat, and like any treat, eggs add calories.

What to do

If your dog ate eggs cooked with butter, salt or seasonings, or a lot of eggs, watch for tummy upset and call your vet if vomiting or diarrhoea is severe or doesn't stop.

How to give it

Fully cooked (hard-boiled or scrambled), plain, without oil, butter, salt, seasonings or other additives; as an occasional treat.
