Can dogs eat salt?
No, not in large amounts. Salty food in moderation should not cause salt poisoning, but eating a lot of salt, for example from homemade salt dough, play dough or lots of sea water, can. Signs include vomiting, strong thirst, tremors and seizures.

Why
Common causes of salt poisoning are homemade salt-dough ornaments and play dough, snow with salt de-icer, and drinking a lot of sea water. Salt poisoning is unlikely when a healthy dog has fresh water, but small dogs with health problems are at more risk if they have no fresh water. Salt must never be used to make a dog vomit.
Signs to watch for
- Strong thirst and peeing a lot
- Vomiting, often within a few hours
- Diarrhoea
- Wobbliness, tiredness
- Tremors or seizures
What to do
If your dog ate a lot of salt, salt dough or play dough, or drank a lot of sea water, contact your vet or a pet poison helpline right away. Note what and how much was eaten. Don't wait for signs, and never give salt to make a dog vomit.
