Can dogs eat butter?
No, it is best not to. Butter is not poisonous, but it is very fatty, and fatty foods can upset a dog's stomach and may trigger pancreatitis, a painful inflammation. Food you share, such as eggs or mashed potato, is best prepared without butter.

Why
Fatty table foods are not a toxicity problem, but fatty foods such as butter, oils and meat drippings may cause pancreatitis. Some breeds, especially miniature Schnauzers, are more prone to it. Vets also suggest preparing food for dogs, such as eggs or mashed potato, without butter.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting, sometimes starting 1–4 days after a fatty meal
- Belly pain
- Diarrhoea
- Poor appetite and low energy
What to do
If your dog ate a lot of butter, or shows vomiting, belly pain, diarrhoea or low energy in the next few days, call your vet as soon as possible.
