OK in small amounts

Can dogs eat broccoli?

Yes, in small amounts as an occasional treat, raw or cooked, with no seasonings or oils. Cut it into bite-size pieces: the florets can irritate the stomach, and tough stalks can block the oesophagus, especially in small dogs.

Updated:

Why

Broccoli florets contain isothiocyanates, which can cause mild to potentially severe stomach irritation. Tough broccoli stalks have been known to cause obstruction in the oesophagus, especially in small dogs, so cooked broccoli cut into bite-size chunks is the better choice.

What to do

Watch how your dog reacts to broccoli and make sure there is no bad reaction before giving more.

How to give it

Plain, raw or preferably cooked, with no seasonings or oils, cut into bite-size chunks. Only small amounts as an occasional treat.

Questions and answers

Are broccoli stalks safe for dogs?

Tough stalks can block a dog's oesophagus, especially in small dogs. Cut broccoli into bite-size chunks; cooked broccoli helps avoid this problem.
