Can dogs eat green beans?

Yes. Plain green beans, raw or cooked, are safe for most dogs in moderation and make a low-calorie treat. Never give green beans with added salt, butter, garlic or other seasonings.

Updated:

Why

Green beans provide vitamins, minerals and fibre and are low in calories; the added bulk and fibre help a dog feel full without adding many calories. Many canned green beans contain high amounts of added salt, and common human green bean recipes are not safe for dogs.

What to do

Ask your vet before giving your dog green beans. Never give green beans cooked with garlic or garlic salt.

How to give it

Serve them raw, or boiled in water or steamed, but keep them plain. Avoid canned green beans and any prepared with butter, garlic, garlic salt or other seasonings.
