OK in small amounts

Can cats eat strawberries?

Yes, a small piece of strawberry is fine as an occasional treat. The ASPCA lists strawberry as non-toxic to cats, but cats are meat eaters and don't need fruit, so keep it to a tiny extra.

Updated:

Why

The ASPCA lists the strawberry plant as non-toxic to cats, and NC State's veterinary hospital lists strawberry among healthy human-food treats for cats and dogs, given in measured amounts and counted in the daily calories. Cats are obligate carnivores and don't need fruit, treats should stay a small part of the daily food, and any plant material can cause vomiting or stomach upset.

What to do

Offer a small piece first. If your cat vomits or gets an upset stomach afterwards, stop and ask your vet.

How to give it

A small piece now and then, counted in your cat's daily food.

Questions and answers

Do cats need fruit?

No. Cats are carnivores: they need nutrients found in meat and don't need fruit or vegetables in their diet. Fruit can only ever be a small extra.
