OK in small amounts

Can dogs eat blackberries?

Yes, in moderation. Blackberries contain lots of vitamins and nutrients and are lower in sugar and calories than some other fruits. Wash them first, and avoid frozen berries, which usually have added sugar or xylitol.

Updated:

Why

Blackberries contain naturally occurring xylitol in trace amounts, as do other fruits and vegetables. Like any food, too many blackberries can cause stomach upset, and treats should make up only a small part of a dog's diet.

What to do

If your dog has a reaction after eating blackberries, call your vet immediately.

How to give it

Washed, plain fresh blackberries; no frozen berries, which usually have added sugar or xylitol; only wild berries you are sure are blackberries.
