Can dogs eat corn cobs?
No. Never give a dog corn on the cob. Dogs may swallow pieces or even the whole cob, which can cause choking or a serious intestinal blockage that may need emergency treatment. Plain corn kernels off the cob are a different matter.
Updated:
Why
Swallowed pieces can block the intestines; in one reported case the blockage restricted the blood supply, and emergency treatment may be needed. Plain kernels in moderation are generally safe; the cob is the danger.
Signs to watch for
- Repeated vomiting
- Not wanting to eat
- Tiredness and less activity
- Diarrhoea
- Dehydration
What to do
Contact your vet right away if your dog swallowed a corn cob or part of one, even if it seems fine. Note when it happened and roughly how much was eaten. Don't wait for signs of a blockage.
