Can dogs eat peaches?
Not recommended. Some vets allow fresh peach flesh in small cubes with the stem and pit removed, but the pit is a real danger: it can cause choking or a gut blockage and contains a form of cyanide.
Updated:
Why
Peach stems, leaves and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides. If a pit is thoroughly chewed, cyanide can be released, and a swallowed pit may block the gut, especially in small dogs. Canned or dried peaches often contain extra sugar. Because the plant is listed as toxic to dogs, we rate peaches as not recommended rather than a safe treat.
Signs to watch for
- Choking or gagging
- Signs of a blockage: repeated vomiting, not eating, tiredness
- Dilated pupils, brick-red gums, difficulty breathing (cyanide)
What to do
If your dog swallowed or chewed a peach pit, contact your vet for advice right away. Note when it happened and how many pits were eaten.
How to give it
Fresh flesh only, in small cubes, with the stem and pit removed. Skip canned and dried peaches.
