Can dogs eat avocado?

No, it's safer to keep avocado away from dogs. Some vets say the flesh is not toxic, but the skin, pit and leaves contain persin, and the large pit can choke a dog or block its gut. Avocado is also very fatty, which can lead to pancreatitis.

Updated:

Why

Sources disagree, so we use the stricter level. The Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs seem relatively resistant compared with other species, the ASPCA names birds and rabbits as the biggest concern, and AKC says the flesh is not toxic. Blue Cross calls persin poisonous to dogs. All agree that the pit can choke a dog or cause a blockage and that the high fat can cause pancreatitis.

Signs to watch for

  • Choking on the pit
  • Signs of a blockage after swallowing the pit: repeated vomiting, not eating, tiredness
  • Feeling unwell from the high fat, which can lead to pancreatitis

What to do

If your dog chewed or swallowed an avocado pit, contact your vet right away and don't wait for signs. If it ate guacamole, call your vet or a pet poison helpline too, because guacamole usually contains onion and garlic. Note what and how much was eaten.
