Can dogs eat coconut?
Yes, in small amounts. Unsweetened coconut flesh is safe for dogs in moderation, but never give the husk or shell. Coconut is high in fat and contains oils that can cause stomach upset and diarrhoea.
Updated:
Why
In small amounts coconut is not likely to cause serious harm, but the flesh and milk of fresh coconuts contain oils that may cause stomach upset, loose stools and diarrhoea. Coconut is higher in fat, so dogs that should not eat high-fat diets or are overweight should have other treats. It is also high in potassium, so caution is needed for dogs with kidney disease. The husk and shell can cause an intestinal blockage.
What to do
Ask your vet before adding coconut to your dog's diet, especially if your dog has had pancreatitis.
How to give it
Unsweetened flesh only, in small amounts, without husk or shell. Coconut milk only unsweetened and free of xylitol; coconut water only as a treat, never instead of water.
Questions and answers
Can dogs drink coconut water or coconut milk?
Coconut water only as a treat, not instead of regular water. Coconut milk only unsweetened and free of artificial sweeteners like xylitol, which is toxic for dogs.
Why not the coconut shell?
The husk and shell can cause serious digestive problems, including an intestinal blockage and stomach irritation, much like eating sticks or wood.
