Can dogs eat fatty meat?
Not recommended. Fatty meat, poultry skin and gristle are not toxic, but they can cause vomiting and diarrhoea or trigger pancreatitis, a painful and sometimes severe inflammation. Some breeds, such as Miniature Schnauzers, are more prone to it.

Why
A fatty meal is a known trigger of pancreatitis in dogs. Effects range from a mild upset stomach to a severe, even life-threatening pancreatitis. Dogs that have had pancreatitis before should avoid fatty foods.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting, sometimes starting 1–4 days after the fatty meal
- Tummy pain (a dog may stretch into a 'prayer' position)
- Diarrhoea
- Not wanting to eat
- Tiredness, fever
What to do
If your dog ate a lot of fatty food, or shows vomiting, tummy pain or tiredness in the following days, contact your vet. Note what was eaten and roughly how much. Signs of pancreatitis can be delayed by a few days.
How to give it
If you share meat, choose plain, lean, cooked meat without skin, fat or seasoning, and no bones.
