Can dogs eat star fruit?
No. Keep star fruit away from dogs. Sour star fruit contains soluble oxalate in dangerous concentrations, which can cause vomiting, drooling, weakness, trembling, low blood calcium and kidney injury.

Why
Pet Poison Helpline says star fruit can result in poisoning in dogs. The main concern is soluble oxalate (oxalic acid), found in dangerous concentrations in sour star fruit. Pet Poison Helpline also notes that sweet star fruit contains very little soluble oxalate and is not poisonous to pets with healthy kidneys, but a vet-reviewed guide says star fruit is not safe for dogs, so we use the stricter level. Even small amounts can lead to health problems, particularly in dogs with kidney issues, and star fruit can make existing kidney problems worse.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Drooling
- Weakness
- Trembling
- Low blood calcium
- Signs of kidney injury, such as peeing a lot
What to do
Remove any remaining star fruit and contact your vet or a pet poison helpline right away, especially if your dog has kidney problems. Signs can appear within a few hours.
