Can dogs eat shrimp?

Yes, a few pieces of plain, fully cooked shrimp are fine for dogs. Remove the shell, head, legs and tail first. Raw shrimp can carry harmful germs, and fried, breaded or seasoned shrimp are not suitable.

Updated:

Why

Raw shellfish contain harmful pathogens that cooking avoids. Shrimp shells are a choking hazard and can cause blockages. Fried or breaded shrimp add unnecessary fats and oils. Shrimp are low in fat and calories but high in cholesterol, so moderation is key.

What to do

Stop giving shrimp if your dog shows tummy discomfort or seems unwell, and call your vet if signs get worse. Also call your vet if your dog swallowed shells and seems to be choking.

How to give it

A few pieces, fully cooked (steamed is best), plain, with shell, head, legs and tail removed; not fried, breaded or seasoned.

Questions and answers
