Can dogs eat pecans?

No. Pecans aren't good for dogs: even a small number can make a dog very sick. They contain juglone, can carry toxic mould, are fatty, and their hard shells can cause choking or blockages. Call your vet if your dog eats any.

Updated:

Why

Pecans contain juglone, which can cause digestive problems, and they are very prone to moulds that produce mycotoxins such as aflatoxin, which can cause serious illness, including neurological problems. Their fat raises the risk of pancreatitis, and the hard shells can block the gut. Sources range from 'not good' to 'can make very sick'; we use the stricter level.

Signs to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite and tiredness
  • Signs of nervous-system problems

What to do

Contact your vet right away, even if your dog ate only a few pecans. Note how many were eaten and whether they were old or mouldy, and don't wait for signs.
