Can dogs eat hazelnuts?
No, it is best not to. Hazelnuts aren't toxic, but their very hard shells can cause choking and blockages, and like other nuts they are high in fat, which can upset a dog's stomach and may lead to pancreatitis.
Updated:
Why
Hazelnut shells are extremely hard and can cause choking and gut blockages. Nuts in general are high in fat and calories: they can be too rich for a dog, cause pancreatitis and add to weight gain. Nuts left lying on the ground can also grow mould that can be toxic to dogs.
Signs to watch for
- Choking or gagging
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Tummy upset or signs of a blockage
What to do
After a nut or two, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea or belly pain. Call your vet if your dog swallowed shells, ate a lot of nuts or nuts that were mouldy, seems to be choking, or shows any of these signs.
