Can dogs eat olives?
Yes, in moderation, if they are plain, unsalted and pitted. Olives aren't toxic to dogs, but the pits can cause choking or a blockage, and canned or pickled olives often contain too much sodium.
Updated:
Why
Olives themselves don't contain toxic ingredients, but the pits can cause choking, block airways and lodge in a dog's intestinal tract. Canned or pickled olives often contain excessive sodium, and too much sodium can lead to dehydration and, in rare cases, salt toxicosis. Olives coated in garlic, seasonings or oils carry additional risks, and olives soaked in alcohol should never be given to a dog.
What to do
If your dog eats a lot of olives, especially with the pits, contact your vet for advice.
How to give it
Only plain, unsalted, pitted olives, in small quantities. Avoid canned or pickled olives and olives with garlic, seasonings, oils or alcohol.
