Toxic — call your vet

Can cats eat raisins?

No. Raisins, like grapes and currants, are on the list of foods toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure. Watch out for cakes, mince pies and other baked goods that contain them, and call your vet if your cat eats any.

Updated:

Why

Cat welfare charities warn that grapes, raisins and currants can cause kidney failure in cats, with cats that have chronic kidney disease possibly at greater risk. Cats are unlikely to eat many raisins on their own but may be tempted by foods that contain them. Cat cases are rare and not well understood, so we use the stricter level.

Signs to watch for

  • Vomiting, often within a day

What to do

Contact your vet or a pet poison helpline right away. Note what your cat ate (raisins or a food containing them), how much and when, and keep the packaging. Don't wait for signs to appear, and don't try to make your cat sick at home.
