Can cats eat cooked bones?

No. Cooked bones, such as chicken or turkey bones, can splinter and cause choking, internal injuries or blockages in cats. Always take meat off the bone before sharing, and get rid of carcasses where your cat can't reach them.

Updated:

Why

Cooked bones can splinter into sharp pieces. Swallowed bones can injure or block a cat's gut, which can be serious and may need surgery.

Signs to watch for

  • Choking
  • Vomiting
  • Tummy pain (hiding, growling, not wanting to be touched)

What to do

Contact your vet right away if your cat swallowed a cooked bone, even if she seems fine. Note what kind of bone it was and when. Don't wait to see what happens, and don't try to make your cat sick at home.

How to give it

If you share plain cooked chicken or turkey, give only boneless meat.

Questions and answers

Can I give my cat turkey from the roast?

Cats Protection says plain, cooked turkey is fine as an occasional treat if it is boneless, unseasoned and skinless. Dispose of the carcass safely out of your cat's reach.
