Can dogs eat mandarins?
Yes, mandarins aren't toxic to dogs and can be given in small amounts, much like oranges. Remove the peel and any seeds first, and keep portions small, because mandarins contain natural sugars.
Updated:
Why
Mandarins contain nutrients similar to oranges, including vitamin C and fibre, but also natural sugars. As with oranges, the peel is tough and hard to digest and can raise the risk of a blockage, and seeds can be a choking hazard, especially for smaller dogs. As with oranges, eating too much can cause digestive upset, including diarrhoea.
What to do
Don't give your dog the peel: as with oranges, it is hard to digest and can raise the risk of a blockage in the gut, which in some cases needs veterinary help.
How to give it
Peeled, without seeds, in small pieces; small portions as an occasional treat.
Questions and answers
Are mandarins different from oranges for dogs?
Not much: they have similar nutrients and natural sugars, and the same rules apply – peel off the skin, remove the seeds and keep portions small.
