Can dogs eat figs?

Yes, fresh figs are generally safe for dogs when prepared properly, but only as an occasional treat. Offer just the soft inside, in small pieces, and never let your dog eat fig leaves, bark or branches. Dried figs are too sugary.

Updated:

Why

Figs themselves are not considered toxic like grapes and cherries, but the fig plant can be harmful. Figs contain vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron. Because fruit contains natural sugar and fibre, too much can have a laxative effect and cause diarrhoea. Dried figs have much more concentrated sugar because the water has been removed.

What to do

If your dog eats any part of the fig plant, get veterinary care right away. If your dog eats several figs and its symptoms don't improve, or it starts to vomit, contact your vet.

How to give it

Only the soft inside of a fresh fig, with all plant material removed, cut into small pieces. Start with a tiny piece and watch for stomach upset or an allergic reaction.
