Can cats eat cheese?

No, cheese is best avoided. It isn't toxic, but many cats are lactose intolerant, so it can upset their stomach. It is also high in fat and salt and doesn't give cats the nutrients they need.

Why

Most adult cats can't properly digest lactose, the sugar in milk and in dairy products such as cheese. This can cause vomiting or diarrhoea and make a cat sluggish. Cheese is also high in fat and salt, and eaten regularly it can lead to weight gain. Lactose-free and plant-based cheeses are not a safe swap, because some dairy alternatives contain ingredients that could be toxic to cats.

Signs to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Sluggishness or low energy
  • Gas or bloating

What to do

If your cat ate a little cheese, there's no need to rush to the vet. Keep an eye on them. If they become unwell or act differently, call your vet and tell them how much cheese your cat ate.

Questions and answers

Are cheese-flavoured cat treats OK?

Treats made for cats with a little cheese are fine in small amounts now and then. If your cat gets an upset stomach, choose a different treat next time.

Is lactose-free or vegan cheese safer?

No. Avoid lactose-free and plant-based cheese too, because many dairy alternatives contain ingredients that could be toxic to cats.
