Can cats eat almonds?

No, almonds are best kept away from cats. Sweet almonds aren't considered toxic, but they are high in oils and fats and can make a cat unwell, with stomach upset or vomiting.

Why

Cats Protection lists almonds among nuts that contain high amounts of oils and fats which can make a cat unwell. The ASPCA says sweet almonds sold for eating are not toxic to pets, but because they are not a normal part of a pet's diet they can cause digestive issues. Bitter almonds contain a cyanide compound and are considered toxic.

Signs to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Upset stomach
  • Seeming unwell

What to do

If your cat ate almonds, contact your vet for advice, especially if she ate a lot or seems unwell. Note what she ate, how much and when. If they were bitter almonds, contact your vet straight away.
